Flat Branch Park Portrait Photography Session | Columbia, MO

I should have titled this article “best photography locations in Columbia, MO” because, well—it’s the truth. Flat Branch Park encompasses Graffiti Beach and the best diner in town, Broadway Diner. I like to think of this area as the holy trinity of midwest portrait photography. Graffiti Beach provides a grungy aesthetic, the park itself has beautiful natural greenery, and the diner brings about a stuck-in-time sense of nostalgia.

Graffiti Beach

Upon our arrival to this grungy dream, we realized that getting down there would be a tad bit rough. As we descended toward the urban swamp, the wealth of photographic possibility became blazingly apparent. Established photographers often caution newbs regarding the difficulty of flash photography. Having had the opportunity to practice with flash as a second shooter at a wedding with Amber Rhea Photography the week prior definitely provided me with a sense of comfort. I broke out my tinted flash diffusers for some experimentation and we got to work.

We finished up at Graffiti Beach with a couple of shots using only the natural light from outside of the tunnel.

We then headed off to grab some photos at Flat Branch Park.

Broadway Diner

We wrapped up the shoot at Broadway Diner. I was very sad that they were closed as their waffles + chocolate chips are the best thing to have ever graced my taste buds.

I decided to use a grungy film-like editing style to accompany Paula’s vintage cowgirl vibe. This shoot was a dream! I left feeling so refreshed and inspired. Shout out to Paula for completely rocking it (as always) and for helping me maneuver my equipment through rocks and over a stream.
